12CrNi3钢属于合金渗碳钢，比12CrNi2A钢有更高的淬透性，因此，可以用于制造比12CrNi2A钢截面稍大的零件。该钢淬火低温回火或高温回火后都具有良好的综合力学性能，钢的低温韧性好，缺口敏感性小，切削加工性能良好，当硬度为HB260～320时，相对切削加工性为60%～70另外，钢退火后硬度低、塑性好，因此，既可以采用切削加工方法制造模具，也可以采用冷挤压成型方法制造模具。为提高模具型腔的耐磨性，模具成型后需要进行渗碳处理，然后再进行淬火和低温回火，从而保证模具表面具有高硬度、高耐磨性而心部具有很好的韧性，该钢适宜制造大、中型塑料模具。但该钢有回火脆性倾向和形成白点的倾向。

特性及适用范围
是用途较广的高级渗碳钢，与15Cr、20Cr钢相比，其强度、塑性、淬透性均高。主要用来制作重负荷条件下要求高强度，高硬度和高韧性的主轴及要求中心韧性很高或承受冲击负荷、表面耐磨、热处理变形小的轴、杆以及在高速和冲击负荷下工作的各种传动齿轮、调节螺钉、凸轮轴
